Student Life Happenings (COVID-19 Edition/Week 11)

[AT THIS TIME, THE OFFICE OF STUDENT LIFE, CENTER FOR ACADEMIC SUCCESS, AND CAREER SERVICES ARE COMPLETELY VIRTUAL]

From the Office of Student Life:

Hey y’all. We know that times are tough right now, and that you probably have a lot of questions. We do too. OSL, CAS, and other offices are currently working on transitioning to virtual work plans to continue providing programming, services, and resources through the rest of the year. We are developing tools to help us in this effort, including a podcast-style channel for social engagement–even while sheltering-in-place!

Stay tuned for more information around this and other Spring term plans. In the meantime, here are some resources that may be helpful as you navigate our newly-remote world:

Federal measures

As of March 18, 2020, the Federal Government has announced it will…

  • Suspend all evictions and foreclosures in public housing through April
  • Allow individuals and businesses to defer their IRS tax payments by up to 90 days (must file by April 15, can defer payment until July 15)
  • Temporarily waive interest on student loan payments
  • Waive all National Park Service entry fees, and
  • Send checks directly to individuals (dependent on Congressional action, checks most likely to be sent April 6 and May 18).*

Local measures

As of March 18, 2020, the City of Portland, Multnomah County, and METRO have announced that they will…

As of March 18, 2020, the State of Oregon (Office of the Governor) has announced…

  • Public K-12 schools are closed until April 28 or later (Executive order)
  • Schools will continue providing some services, including meals (Executive order)
  • A ban on gatherings of 25 people or more, and restrictions on restaurant dining service (Executive order)

Suspended payments

The following companies have indicated flexibility around monthly billing, or have waived fees, as a result of COVID-19:

  • Bank of America (60 day payment deferral)
  • Comcast (free public wifi for 60 days)
  • CVS Pharmacy
  • JP Morgan
  • Portland General Electric
  • Sprint
  • T-Mobile
  • Verizon
  • Walgreens Pharmacy
  • Wells Fargo*
